Clearing the cache is a great way to speed up your iPhone (or iPad). Here’s how to delete unwanted files and make your device run like a dream.
As iPhones and iPads get clogged with unwanted files and apps, they tend to slow down. In this article, we’ll explain how to clear cache, junk, and memory-blocking files on your device to make it run faster.
iOS and iPadOS devices don’t require the same level of maintenance as Macs (or, heaven forbid, Windows PCs), but they do require a little attention to run at optimal speeds; older iPhones and iPads in particular will benefit from performance in spring Great cleaning. Clearing also helps on the human level, as it allows you to focus on the apps and files you use.
How to Clear Cache on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and scroll down to the fifth group of options (starting with Passwords and Accounts). Click Safari.
- Scroll down and tap “Clear
- History and Website Data”.
In the pop-up window, tap “Clear History and Data” to confirm.
Delete unwanted app data
Data stored by other applications can be cleared using the Use option in Settings.
- Tap Settings > General > iPhone Storage. (On iPads, this option will be labeled iPad Storage.)
- At the bottom of the screen (below are suggestions for saving space), you’ll see your apps, arranged by the amount of storage they take up. Tap on apps that take up a lot of space.
- Check the numbers for files and data. This includes related media such as pictures, songs and podcasts, saved games and preferences; in some cases, it can be much larger than the app itself.
- If the Documents & Data number exceeds 500MB and you are prepared to lose the above files, please consider deleting and reinstalling the application to clear this space. (The app below is only 319KB, so we won’t bother. It’s a game we just started playing.)
- If you decide to continue, click Delete App, confirm, then go to the App Store (or your Purchased List) and download it again. This fresh installation will not contain data and documentation and will therefore be smaller.
Free up memory by restarting your iPhone or iPad
For the most part, iOS manages memory well without any user involvement. But we did find that restarting your iPhone from time to time is a great way to clear memory and ensure that important apps have enough time to run happily.
Here’s how to restart your iPhone:
- Press and hold the power button (on the top or upper right corner of the device) until Slide to Power Off appears. If your iPhone doesn’t have a Home button (XR, 11, 11 Pro, etc.), you need to press and hold Power and Volume at the same time until the sliders appear.
- Slide the shutdown slider.
- Wait until the device shuts down completely, then hold down the power button to turn on iPhone again.
Doing this regularly is very important on the iPhone, but it’s not so important these days. Still, it will work on older models.
